1. INTRODUCTION
This is an essay about change.
When it comes to change, we mostly discover it to be a word calling up resistance. At first sight it may seem we don't like to change - even if there are a variety of things or characteristics, which we really, consciously or sub-consciously, would like to change.
No one will deny that we live in times with huge changes going on. Perhaps there are already more changes going on than we are able to handle. More than ever, however, we can - and ultimately have to- discover the universal truth of change: change is the principle of life itself.
Moreover: the biggest changes often start very incognito, unknown and unseen. Because all change starts with -and is in fact- a change within our consciousness, when we start looking at things from a different angle.
This definitely requires information and the capacity the open up to total new concepts. And courage too, as change remains invisible for quite some time for the outside world, which doesn't always, understand what's going on. That's why we need a creative mind and intellect willing to experiment to find ways to implement new findings. So doing enables us to truly integrate change; without integration knowledge and information remains lifeless matter.
Creative use of our consciousness towards self-change is a truly and cost-less approach to take up responsibility in a transition time between cycles. It is a way to really do something, how- or whatever our personal situation may be.
This essay might give you some hints on the 'How'. It is based on personal experiments, inspired by the Raja Yoga teachings of the Brahma Kumaris and an international project "Global Co-operation for a Better World", a peace messenger initiative dedicated to the United Nations. It was originally written back in 1989, but now changed its form to find its way onto the web.

2. A NEW APPROACH TO LIFE
Solving a variety of problems
There are obviously a variety of problems and sorrows in today's world. So first of all: we're not going to deal here with existing problems directly. We'll rather look how to change things within ourselves and also the way we look at things. Change the world, change yourself is a simple but very valuable truth. Change in our consciousness does have a very real impact on a bigger scale - we tend to under-estimate the power of our mind and/or lack resources to constructively use it.When being confronted with problems or any sorrow from within (feelings of inferiority, irritations, jealousy, ), we might finding ourselves 'fighting' with them. It is an understandable reaction. And who hasn't had the experience of going against, trying to force things, but finally realising not to progress a step or not coming any closer to a solution.
Fighting with problems is tiring and discouraging and not really realistic either. And even if we have to act externally, a first step is always made within. The first step lies in realising problems are there to bring us a step further. This means in changing our vision and approach towards them. What is missing is the right angle to look from.
A different approach is needed
Every problem has its opposite and its solution. War means lack of peace; hate means absence of love, etc. Every problem leads us to a possible field of practice. By transforming the appearance of the problem into its real essence, we discover a key for new vision.
Simplistic scheme Problem New vision Hate
I have to
Jealousy
This is unfair ; I'm the victim
There is opposition
I am not being recognised
It is your fault
I'm angry with you
Unconditional love
I want to
I'm glad you're doing it
In every situation I can progress
Although I do not agree, I can remain constructive
What did I discover special in the other?
In how far do I see in somebody else my own weakness?
I forgive your defamation and take up responsibility for my own anger.
Going back to the essence always shows us how we can start contributing to the solution. Creating a new vision already means half of the solution has been found. Going back to the seed is the key for all kinds of change, even in extreme situations. And the seed is Consciousness.
A new approach to life
These simple examples show how something actually something changes, when positioning ourselves differently. There is some transformation happening, i.e. the 'form' is trans'formed', it gets a new form.
But what do we really mean with new? Because there is in fact nothing new. Whatever we call new generally is another interpretation or another way of using something, which already exists. This brings us to the point of integration: using your creativity to change what already exists into another form. When the form changes, integration happens.
Look at matter e.g.: a table is made up of atoms and other tiny particles, which, once burnt, disintegrate and become part of other substances. Food is digested and sustains different parts of the body. Previous concepts and models inspired a new concept of a car. And this law also has value for the change of our personality and the world in general.
Change doesn't fall out of the sky. Change is a cycle, with an initiation, preparation, execution and conclusion. It is a transition between one state to another, from one form to another. Our 'old' personality is bound to be 'renewed'; the world is in a process of renewal too.
But going back to our state of mind doesn't make it necessarily makes it easy, because we basically haven't done lots of research onto consciousness and its impact onto the various layers of our planet. And moreover, we will have to go through various confrontations with our old consciousness; old thoughts, old concepts and prejudices that will tend to overpower us.
It may help to consider the truth that all of us, we in fact do like change because it is the source of inspiration, of enthusiasm, progress and contentment. We only lack the power, strength and/or knowledge to actually process it.
Create a new model means we start observing who we actually are and what we might consider old or ready for change. We can then create our own method & program to train our consciousness through study and practice. And offer it as our most inner and intimate contribution for the healing of our planet.
A new approach to life means the opening of the third eye, our consciousness. This implies the creative use of our mind. So first thing to do is to go somewhat deeper into the understanding of what consciousness actually is.
Suggested exercises:
- Take a moment to become aware of your thoughts now.
- Take a moment to become aware of the kind of thoughts you had today
- Take a moment each day to review the day. You may take the help of a journal. Define what's happening to you in terms of consciousness.

3. CONSCIOUSNESS
About thoughts...
We think the whole day. We think an enormous amount of thoughts each day; some people give numbers between 30.000 and 50.000, depending on the speed of our thoughts. But: we can't see, feel, touch or hear our thoughts. And still they are there, all the time.
So there is something special about them. They follow another logic, other laws than the physical ones we are taught, like e.g. gravity. Thoughts are meta-physical. And as this is a dimension, which we are less familiar with, due to a variety of reasons, we need to become more aware of the nature and potential of this unknown (inner) world.
To start with we can become aware of different kinds of thoughts:
Necessary thoughts: thoughts which we need to live our day to day life. How to get somewhere, who I need to contact, when the best time is to do something, what could be a good meal for today, etc.
Negative thoughts: they are linked with destructive forces or energies such as hate, jealousy, anger, ego, envy ... They always give us a bad feeling, even if we don't show it outwardly.
Positive thoughts: they are linked with constructive forces or energy such as joy, silence, purity, happiness, wisdom, power, love who are in fact the original qualities of our consciousness. These thoughts always result in a good feeling about ourselves, even if we have to make some effort, because they are harmonising.
Waste thoughts: they are not really negative, but we don't need them at the very moment we think them or they are not at all essential, but keep on taking a lot of space in our consciousness. Worries in general e.g. Or thinking about the same thing on and on again, even if you don't wish to. Or thinking about something completely different when somebody speak to you. Waste thoughts are wasted energy and they make us loose a lot of energy.
It might be important here to emphasise that positive thinking doesn't mean life becomes paradise instantly, and that it doesn't mean life is always sunshine. It does mean we make a conscious and positive choice to change our vision and attitude towards life and the things happening to us. In fact positive thinking becomes a way of living, an art of life: things don't happen anymore to us, we start making them happen.
How our consciousness works
Generally speaking we can say consciousness is all our thoughts and thought-patterns together forming an energy centre, a point of awareness. To change our consciousness or to use our consciousness in transformation will imply an in depth understanding and managing of our thoughts.
Through thinking - generating thoughts - we create certain thought patterns, which are going to determine our way of reacting and our behaviour. We can explore this principle through the following scheme:
The mind: is like a projection-screen on which all thoughts are being projected. Thoughts, emotions, desires, all are created through the mind. But thoughts are always first.
The intellect: is our faculty to think (reflect), to analyse, to judge. It is the place where conscience, motivation and will power are generated. Our intellect enables us, in fractions of seconds, to evaluate any situation on the basis of what we have learnt, past experiences, values etc. Our intellect allows us to put a thought into action or not.
Sub-consciousness: (attitudes, in Sanskrit: samskaras) whatever we do or think leaves an imprint on a sub-conscious level, as if everything is recorded on an internal hard disk. This faculty of memory works like a groove in a record: every time we perform an action (positive or negative), a groove is made; repetitive actions deepen the groove in our sub-consciousness. These grooves work like programming & form the basic characteristics or tendencies of our personality. The deeper the groove, the stronger the programming.
The basic faculty in this cyclic pattern of thinking - discerning - acting is the intellect, which works as a filter and gives direction, based on our value system, education etc. A lot of processes however, have been automated for the sake of practicality of our day to day functioning. This means that we're no longer consciously aware of how our intellect directs and programs.
When the intellect becomes weak, and certain tendencies become destructive, this cyclic pattern causes us great loss. The tendencies instilled in our sub-consciousness invoke similar (destructive) thought/feelings, which are automatically being expressed in action (through our body) without further control of the intellect.
This explanation may seem a bit artificial (intellectual), but allows us to realise how we are entangled in these cyclic patterns and how important it is to work on the level of the intellect (meaning through our faculty of conscious discernment, decision making and will power). This isn't an intellectual process, but a re-education of our own consciousness, which requires a lot of self-love, patience and endurance.
Only when we break through our old patterns, after having seen and realised them, can we experience living in stead of being lived and become truly free. To work through the intellect implies we study and practice making new choices, setting new patterns. Whenever we choose new, positive thoughts, we create new patterns, new programs. Doing something a few times differently already creates a new, positive pattern. And the more we think constructively, the cleaner the intellect becomes, giving us the energy for instilling new habits (e.g. to stop smoking, controlling anger). So the process works vice-versa.
To create new patterns constant attention is needed; no tension, but a spiritual warrior attitude: our best friend and greatest enemy are our thoughts. If we are aware, it means we're no longer asleep; we then use our consciousness in a most creative, but also efficient, way to contribute to real changes.
Levels of energy and higher consciousness
But is there more. To really be motivated in a transformative process we have to realise how our thought energy is a real energy, giving form to reality.
Thoughts are, as said earlier, energy, which we can call meta-physical energy, because we can't perceive them through our physical perception. Thoughts follow other laws than matter. Thoughts are vibrations. We all know vibrations; e.g. we come in a place where there's a nice, peaceful atmosphere, or on the contrary is a lot of tension. We feel it -can't explain it in words perhaps- but now that what we perceive is very real. Because of the reality of the working and nature of these meta-physical vibrations, the state of our consciousness has a great impact. Not only on our immediate environment, but far beyond too.
Positive thoughts create higher energy, vibrations and negative thoughts mean lower vibrations. Positive energy stimulates our mental and physical health and gives us good and happy feelings; negative vibrations do the opposite. An important law on the level of consciousness and transformation of our personality is that positive vibrations are stronger than negative vibrations. Perhaps this doesn't seem obvious at first, but when we practice being in a powerful and constructive state of mind, enough, we not only can protect ourselves through our own vibrations, but we also can influence our environment constructively.
Creating positive thought patterns and a higher vibration level is creating a higher consciousness. We can easily recognise a higher, positive consciousness: thoughts will be calm, there will be fewer thoughts with more power, and the thoughts we think will be easily put into action. And above all there will be different practical powers available such as the power to withdraw, to face, to tolerate, to judge, to discriminate, to co-operate, to be flexible, to let go...
A higher consciousness finally implies an integer personality full of qualities and mental powers. It is such personalities our society is desperately in need of.
Suggested exercises:
- Look at your communication with others: there are verbal and non-verbal levels, but there is definitely also the level of thoughts going on, a level of vibrations. Our energy often tells much more and never lies.
- Look at how children recognise our real feelings, through our vibrations.
- Check your state of mind with a helpful table and determine the effects of it on yourself and your environment.

4. PRACTICE
Positive thinking practically
Programming a computer implies in depth analysis of the structure of the envisaged processes and the application of a specific programming-language and codes. Through creative use of our intellect, which works like the processor of our consciousness if we make the analogy with a computer, we can re-program our attitudes or tendencies.
We need therefore:
- To be aware of what we're thinking and what thought-patterns we use in various situations. This enables us to see clearer in the cause and effect process of our consciousness and also
- To determine where we want to be heading.
- We can then introduce new series of positive or constructive phrases into our day to day dealings with situations, others and ourselves.
A first step becomes possible by the practice of observing the self, which implies a constant attention. Before starting any action or activity, practice setting an imaginary step aside with your consciousness and observe what happens: what do you think, what do you feel, what is your input in the situation, what is the result. Don't let it become a rigidity or stress; practice to let it be a process that flows. This awareness helps to detach the self from the practical situations and creates space to have an input of a new, more constructive ways of handling situations where necessary.
On the basis of personal observations, we can then formulate new program-language and codes to achieve our aim. Here comes in something that we could call self-study or -research, which implies some effort. Because on the basis of our observations we might for example discover some attitude which want to change, like irritation. We will then have to find out some antidote, or appropriate code, call it a metaphysical or meta-law, which applies for you. This means that you will have to reformulate your thoughts into a significant new phrasing to you, a key which really helps to overcome or change the situation which would cause you normally some irritation.
Once we have found out a key that works, we will have to nourish our consciousness with it to really engrave a new pattern or attitude. Some moments of meditative silence in the morning or evening, in which we literally practice visualising a situation differently or instilling a new thinking pattern, will help greatly to obtain success.
Some hints - examples - laws to start with
To clarify previous chapter, we can consider some examples of meta-laws, working on the level of consciousness. We can definitely find more on the basis of our own observations and practice, and starting from the logic behind the simple scheme discussed earlier. In fact, they will only work if we personalise them on the basis of our own experiences.
(You'll find more examples in the addendum)As said earlier a diary may be a very helpful tool to keep a track of our process, define our own transformation keys, and come to know ourselves better.
- Let go -you get whatever you let go. If you want to obtain something e.g., and don't succeed immediately, then let it go. If you want leadership e.g., then don't take it, but give co-operation where appropriate.
- I become/am what I think. What is within reflects outside. If I don't trust someone, he/she may distrust me also. Let me think about that person as somebody trustworthy, and this may be a source of inspiration.
- Positive is stronger than negative. If I have too many expectations, this can't work of course, but experiment: focusing on a positive quality of someone whom I am in conflict with, may help solving the situation.
- What I give I will get. If I want to be respected, the first thing to do is to practice respecting.
- I am only an actor in a big theatre game. A key to look sometimes in a lighter (meaning: less serious or heavy but not careless) way.
- Difficult situations make me strong. We all have to pass through tough periods or situations. They can be opportunities to change our victim-consciousness. Seeing them as tests to improve already gives another light;
- Every situation has its benefit. Even if I can't see it: there's definitely some benefit hidden when I hold onto and focus on constructive aims.
- I radiate love (or peace, happiness, strength, ). Fill in any quality that is appropriate. Concentrating on our innate qualities may be the best key to solve a variety of situations in which we have to face anger, jealousy, aggression, suffering, etc.
- I cannot change the other, I can change myself. Desiring to change others, may be a source of energy loss. We cannot change others; they have to change themselves. We can inspire others and also accept them; this of course doesn't mean we agree with everything they do, but seeing them as individuals playing their role, without the desire to change them, can be helpful mental setting.
- The person is not the habit. It is not because someone tells a lie that he is a liar. Behaviour is not the same as the person himself.
Silence: the utmost creative power
Change starts and finishes with the power of silence: silent reflection enables us to see clearly which thought-patterns and attitudes we should change and after the transformation there is a feeling of silent contentment and being fulfilled. This is the best nourishment to increase the quality of our thoughts and consciousness. We become what we think.
A silent mind is the greatest source of creativity and creative power. In silence we can not only observe our thoughts, we can also learn to work with them and apply them in renewal processes. Through reflection, consciousness-training and meditation, we can draw energy from within to be used for active transformation but also in processes of intuition, planning, decision making and managing.
In silence we can discover the truth about the nature of our consciousness which is -in essence- loving, peaceful, powerful energy. Silence opens a door to self-respect and true love for others and ourselves. Silence allows us to discover ourselves as valuable beings, with qualities and powers. Due to the dust the lamp apparently doesn't shine anymore; but just by removing the dust, we're able to realise the nature of the lamp again: that of shining brightly.
Silence is a result of purity in the mind. When there's no interference of negative or wasteful thoughts or emotions, there is higher energy emanating. This positive energy is not only a contribution to our own happiness and health, it has also an immediate effect on those whom we live and work with. The power of silence works like nuclear energy: on a subtle level, but with an enormous power. It is not for nothing that the words atom (atomic power) and atma have the same roots. Atma means consciousness, soul-power. The smallest particles, atoms, potentially have enormous power. Our consciousness & thoughts have an equal potential.
Whilst our planet is changing towards a new era, our positive lifestyle not only becomes an inspiration for others, but also contributes to the added collective consciousness on our planet. This might very well have a much greater effect than generally is accepted.
Suggested exercises:
- Determine 3 basic tendencies, programs, you're dealing with in daily life and cause you suffering as they trigger of easily, automatically, causing you negative or wasted energy. Practice observing yourself in a variety of situations, at home/work/leisure time, to be able to discern.
- Make a week program in which you take each day one of the suggested meta-laws above to see how the are working in your own life.
- Take one basic tendency you want to change. Take some time each day to reflect in silence on its antidote and try to formulate a phrase you want to work with. Apply your new thinking process, by practicing it in each situation the trigger generally pulls off. Evaluate in a diary.
- Have some silent meditation: take on a comfortable position, breathe calmly and concentrate your energy within. Actively practice thinking some simple constructive phrases about the positive nature of our true nature: I am peace, a peaceful source of energy, I radiate calm and quite vibrations. or similar about our loving nature: I am a loving being, I radiate warm energy around me, Repeat consciously, with intervals. Deny all other thoughts coming in but re-affirm these simple thoughts within. Enjoy.

5. BENEFITS OF A POSITIVE CONSCIOUSNESS
Happiness
The W.H.O. (World Health Organization) defined 'Health' in a more holistic manner, as a state whereby one is not only physically all right, but also socially and psychologically.
The physical dimension refers to the state of our body. Physical health depends on our life- and food-habits, immunity to disease etc. Health however is more than absence of disease or absence of sorrow caused by disease. A subtle difference, referring to the psychological experience of a situation.
The psychological dimension of health (and dis-ease) is more and more recognised. There is a very important interaction between health and the psychological state of the individual: stressed or calm, anxious or assertive, depressive or in a good mood, exaggerating or capable to see everything in a relative way, tolerant or distressed, etc.
The social and/or material dimension refers to our material situation, the use of our means and possessions and also to the quality of our relationships. This dimension also has a direct or indirect influence on our total health.
Our happiness is immediately related to our health, which is determined by those different dimensions. Important to realise is that these different dimensions are interdependent; they influence one another. We can observe many examples of this process in our lives. If we are ill it could very well be we loose our happiness through that and we come depressed. But it could also be that we are psychologically strong enough to face our illness, take care of ourselves and remain happy. And yet another example: if relations with our close relatives are tense, it easily has an influence on our mood; even to the extent we get head-ache, stomach-ache, throat-ache etc., depending on the weak part of our body.
Even more important is to realise that happiness is a 'state of mind', meaning an experience of our consciousness, influenced by the state of our body, mind, relationships etc. It is here we're introducing another dimension, a spiritual dimension, referring to the influence of positive thoughts on our total health. Our happiness is indeed directly influenced by the quality of our thoughts.
The spiritual dimension
When we hear the word 'spiritual', we might think about something mysterious, religious or sectarian. The term actually and simply refers to the influence our consciousness and thoughts have on the various levels of our existence. Let us analyse this a bit further.
Spirituality, or the spiritual dimension, is in essence pointing out to the process through which we are able to realise ourselves as 'spirits', consciousness, constantly producing subtle energy, thought-energy. This process of self-realisation includes the realisation of our original nature of being fully positive, i.e. filled with positive qualities.
As long as we identify ourselves with external factors as the colour of our body or our social position, we block the full and positive expression of our consciousness. Many examples can illustrate how these wrong identifications in fact prevent our positive nature to flow.
- When I think of myself as a director, perhaps there will come a moment that I consider myself of greater value than the secretary, which opens the door to arrogance.
- If I identify myself with my body, I will also consider myself as the sickness. If my arm is hurt however, does it mean I am hurt? In terms of consciousness of course we know this is false. Local anaesthesia indicates how I can be aware of my body without feeling it.
- If I identify with my weaknesses, and consider myself as low or bad then I'll be defending myself when I get some confronting feedback.
- If I am too attached to my social role or position, I might loose a lot of energy through a process called fear. Fear to loose the job or the position or fear not to be able to fulfil the responsibilities linked to such a position.
Healing and harming effects of consciousness
In this closing chapter we will take a closer look to some specific influences our consciousness can have on our total well being - in both senses positively healing or negatively harming.
Physically
Positive thoughts have a direct influence on our body through the different glands that are produced by the thalamus and hypothalamus (e.g. adrenaline). Our positive thoughts create positive vibrations that have a harmonising effect on the excretion of these glands. These glands determine most of the important functions of our body, like the growth-process, metabolism, etc. We can easily understand how those glands work and what the interaction is with our consciousness when we look at emotions. We speak of becoming 'pale of fear', 'red of anger' etc. Another example: when we are happy, we tend to have much more energy, even physically.
Another aspect is food. The things we eat have a great influence on the mind, directly or indirectly. Directly for example by eating meat, we automatically take in extra hormones (like adrenaline), with an immediate effect on body and mind. But indirectly also, e.g. by the state of mind we have when we prepare or consume our food. Food is matter and higher or lower vibrations influence matter.
Psychologically
As explained earlier it is clear that the various dimensions in our lives influence each other and are interdependent. Positive thinking contributes to a mental balance, to a peaceful, calm but strong mind. Our thoughts do have healing power.
Looking at disease in terms of a phenomenon can help to clarify this. Disease is not negative: it is a sign something goes wrong. Considering it in this way gives us the possibility to become responsible and look for causes and prevention. But there's more. Even the pain level decreases through a positive approach: our tolerance-power to physical pain becomes greater. Diseases are mostly psychosomatic anyway; it means they are directly or indirectly created by negative emotions as stress, fears, doubts, guilt, etc., coming from negative or wasteful thinking over a longer period of time. Positive thoughts stimulate positive emotions, with lesser psychosomatic diseases as a result.
People often react differently in the same or in similar situations. Obviously it is their 'psyche' which determines their reaction. A mentally balanced person has more psychological strength (see also earlier: power to tolerate, to let go, to withdraw, to face, to judge, to discriminate, to co-operate, to accommodate, ...). He or she will be able to adjust and react better towards the variety of situations and obstacles coming on his/her way. So the process works vice-versa. A constructive consciousness stimulates inner balance, again enabling us to react positively. In this way our energy increases.
Identifying ourselves with our original positive nature helps us in developing self-respect. If I don't identify myself any longer with the mistakes I did, the lack of peace or anger I feel or the weaknesses I have and if in stead I concentrate myself on my positive potentiality, I liberate a lot of energy which I can use towards the tasks I have to perform. This leads to better practical results, which again will increase the level of my self-respect.
Yet to handle certain situations better and to balance our mind and psychic powers, we need to deeply understand certain spiritual laws also. The understanding that each of my actions has it's equal reaction might help erasing many of the why's I have in mind. If I realise how being positive is stronger than negativity I may find a way to continue my good wishes towards others, even in cases of extreme adversity.
Socially
On the social dimension we can basically point out to how positive self-esteem contributes to better relationships. A constructive consciousness is helpful in gradually breaking down many barriers in relationships like expectations, prejudices, projections etc. They are often defence-mechanisms to hide our lack of confidence anyway.
A peaceful and positive mind guarantees better communication, as we become better listeners and better speakers. If we have a lot of thoughts in mind, if our mind is disturbed or even if we're just thinking about things which are not necessary, it will be difficult to concentrate on what the other is saying or on what is happening in a group. Positive thoughts have a calming effect on the mind and thus help in focusing our attention. A calm mind enables us further to better order our thoughts: an important condition to express ourselves clearly.
Another aspect of communication is authenticity. When we are true to ourselves, we do not deny our feelings, thoughts or opinions but search to express them in an honest but appropriate way. It is clear that a positive atmosphere, in which fear diminishes, inspires such an attitude, so that we don't need to hide ourselves any longer behind all kind of masks which consume our energy.
To detect and look for qualities in others is an active form of positive thinking. It is an art to pick up qualities and not defects, and it has to do a lot with seeing qualities in the self. Seeing qualities in others not only will improve relationships, it also offers a protection against negativity, hatred, etc. within one's own mind.
Suggested exercises:
- Have some silence before preparing a meal. Practice some positive thoughts about yourself and others and then start cooking. Enjoy your meal peacefully. Observe your state of mind afterwards.
- When being confronted with some illness: search for the possible psychological or metaphysical explanation of the disease in appropriate literature or by contacting an alternative healer.
- Determine some of the harmful identifications applying to your life and the expectations, prejudices or fears they involve.
